The world in which we live seems only to take from us giving nothing in return except its stressful demands. When escaping it becomes essential for survival, at least for a little while, we must get recentered and find the peace we need away from all the chaos. This image is called “Peace Lives Here” for that very reason. I recommend having a reminder of your own peaceful escape displayed in your home so you can always “get away” for a moment when you need focus.  

Strolling the wood on a peaceful Illinois spring day I happened upon a tree long past its prime. Encircled by life all around, it seemed sad and alone. To honor the life this majestic tree had lived, I chose to capture it using infrared which allowed it to stand prominently front and center for a final portrait. I've always had a bit of an arboreal affection and I felt this grand tree deserved to be remembered.

“She Loved This Place”, the old man said slowly strolling on a warm, spring afternoon. “I come here to remember because it feels like her”. That is the power of art. We are all the sum of our memories and I create imagery to spark them. Somewhere in this catalog of work is an image that will touch a special memory for you. I chose to capture “She Loved This Place” in infrared rather than using traditional optical light. It gives this scene an other-worldly feel in a gentle way. I hope you enjoy it.

“Top o’ the Morning” presents a very special, painterly and whimsical quality. On a dreary, gray day, this little tree caught the edge of a solitary beam of sunlight the briefly broke through the clouds for just a few seconds. While I was editing this piece it just seemed to me to look like a parisol standing in the forest with a cheerful greeting. As a framed fine art piece on your wall, it will cheer up any of your dull days.

This ICM technique is called "The Spin", a motion in which the camera is rotated like a steering wheel while the shutter is open. This is quite possibly the least frequently applied ICM technique as it's powerful effect must be used sparingly. But here, "Dizzy Daisies" demonstrates the intensity of its use very well. The desaturated colors help to temper the effect and add a touch of visual curiosity.

"Crimson Queen" is a wonderland of visual candy in which the intense colors and powerful tones dazzle the eye. This subject of this ICM image is a Japanese Maple tree being washed in late afternoon sunlight. What fun it is to sit and stare at this piece.

This captivating image is an example of a technique known as ICM - Intentional Camera Movement - in which the artist deliberately causes movement during the extended exposure. This image emerged from a session I conducted while photographing some woodland trees. Hardly believing what I saw, It left me speechless and in tears. It is quite literally the hand of God moving through my art. I say that because I had no intentional or deliberate part to play other than making the photograph. The more you look the more you may see. I was breathless to see the depth and meaning far beyond the first glance. The central subject is clearly Jesus while on the cross. A deeper study will reveal the Father’s face over Jesus’s right shoulder with his arm wrapping around. The energy in the swirl speaks of the very moment in time in which the mission was done and the purpose was accomplished. His death began the journey into Hell to remove the keys of death and the grave from Lucifer, and depart leading a massive parade of captives set free. This image was God himself being creative with my hands and camera. I had nothing to do with what emerged. Jesus often said at the end of many of his teachings, “for him who has ears to hear, let him hear”, or for him who has eyes to see, let him see”. Some have viewed this image and come away without seeing what I see. Some have asked me if I photographed a tree stump. I am fascinated with what people see in this image. What do you see?
